Unit: “Giant Coordinate System”
The “Giant Coordinate System” unit engages 5th-grade students in a 30-40 minute interdisciplinary activity integrating mathematics, arts, and social studies. The primary objective is to practice plotting points in a coordinate system while creating mathematical art and building teamwork skills. Students will work in groups to prepare the axes and plot points using paper tape on the floor, creating a large coordinate system. The unit emphasises understanding coordinate systems, organising teamwork, and fostering collaboration. Activities include revising axes and coordinates, plotting points, and discussing the group’s performance, culminating in a creative and educational decoration for the school entrance hall.
