Unit: “Earthquake”
The “Earthquake” unit engages 9th-grade students in a 360-minute interdisciplinary project that integrates mathematics, physics, science, geology, technology, art, and computer science. The primary objective is to understand the causes and effects of earthquakes and design a model demonstrating how buildings can be constructed to resist ground displacement. Students will create a model of a building on a moving platform, program a microbit to record shaking and explore ways to reduce building movement during an earthquake. The unit emphasises teamwork, problem-solving, and practical application of scientific concepts. Activities include measuring, drawing, constructing models, programming, and presenting the project, fostering a comprehensive understanding of earthquake dynamics and engineering solutions.
